All about Pothos aka Money plant.

Hello from the other side!

As you know from the title, today we are gonna talk about Pothos aka Money plant. Or if you are fancy Devils Ivy. Here I will tell you the history of this plant and how you can easily propagate it with just one plant and how to take care of it both in water and in soil.

Here we go...

Pothos is an evergreen plant. It has heart-shaped, thick, green leaves. They sometimes have splashes of yellow. It's an awesome plant to start with if you are a new plant mom. They are easy to take care of and easy to add some green around the house. They do well in low light or indirect light and can grow in soil or in water. But they do not do well in direct sunlight.

Pothos is very popular because it can be grown in water or in dry soil. Cuttings can be taken from a mother plant and rooted in water and kept in water as a houseplant. This is convenient for placing a pothos plant in hard to reach areas in a jug of water where it can remain untouched as long as water remains in the jug. Pothos can also be started in soil and will tolerate moderate periods of dry soil with little effect to the plant.

Oddly enough, cuttings started in one growing medium have a hard time switching to the other. So, a pothos plant started in soil has a hard time thriving if moved to water, and a pothos cutting started in water will not do very well in soil, especially if it has spent a long period growing in water. Also, they are poisonous plants but rarely fatal. It can promote irritation and vomiting. Toxic to cats, dogs and children, but it won't kill you.

I have 5 pothos plants, that I take care of:
  • One of which is growing in soil.
  • Two of them are in glass bottles.
  • The third one is in a plastic container.
  • Last one is in a 2lt coco-cola bottle.

I have been propagating and taking care of these plans for 4 months now. It's growing big, healthy, green leaves. So let me introduce them to you.

This right here is my bedroom plant. I had cut a 2ltr coco-cola bottle into my desired size. I smoothed the rough edges with sandpaper and punched holes with the punching machine. The cap was red so I painted it red with a sponge using acrylic colours. I had jute rope lying around so I used that to hold it up.

It's a new plant. I took long stems from the mother plant and took out all the extra leaves from the bottom leaving only one on top. Every leaf joint has roots coming out so It is easy. You can see some already have bushy roots. They are growing rapidly. Pothos are great bedroom plants, they create oxygen at night time which does not affect your air quality.

I took the bigger one from its mother plant 3 months ago and you can see the growth. Right now the length is being supported with a plastic stick and I am planning to wrap around it fully and then maybe leave it as it is and not let them fall. The other one I planted about a month ago. It was earlier in the soil so it's growth is a little slow compared to others but its roots are growing and have a new leaf so I am positive.

You can see the big healthy green leaves and roots. It takes time to see growth but in a month, you can see visible growth. Since this and the above coco-cola bottle, the plant is in the water I change the water once every week with tap water so that it gets the nutrients.

This yellow container is a maggie noodles cup. I have been propagating pothos in this since a month now. I took the long stems and cut it into small individual plants. Every leaf has a root coming from the other side so it's easy to propagate and cut.

These are the plants that are in that pot. I change it's water every week too. You can see the growth in its roots. Their leaves are healthy and big.

Here you can see that a small root is coming from the ends of the leaf and a new leaf is growing too. You really need to be patient with the plant and give them care.

After a few weeks of care, they grow very well and you can see the roots here. They are so big and healthy.

This is the mother plant I have and it's growing in soil. It has grown thrice it's the size in the last 4 months. I have kept it at our balcony near the railing and I wrapped the long stem along. It looks so beautiful.

For fertiliser, in 1ltr of water add 2 spoons of raw milk and spray it on the leaves and put some on the soil, do this once a month. This is only for the plants that are growing in the soil. I water this plant alternate days or when the soil looks dry. It is low maintenance so it does not require lots of water.

Also, when you change the water of the plants make sure to clean the container in which the plants are kept so that they don't get algae. I would also recommend giving the leaves a wash when you are watering them or when you are changing their water. This helps the leaves to be clean and feel fresh.

Just take care of them and give them enough attention in the beginning and it will be easier along the way. And don't worry about the plants that don't grow well or die. Sometimes that happens too so propagate enough so that if some get spoil, you would still have enough to carry on with your plant journey.

So what are you waiting for? go ahead and plant. If you want to know about any other plant, let me know in the comments below.

Love, Athena.
